Vodou or Voodoo? Which is it?<\/h2>\n

Vodou is a religion that developed in Haiti among the enslaved African population during the colonial period. Retaining some aspects of the ancient African religion of Dahomey, Vodou exists alongside Christianity. It\u2019s often said that Haiti is 90 percent Catholic, 10 percent Protestant, and 100 percent Vodou.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably seen it spelled \u2018voodoo\u2019 in other places, but those who practice the religion tend to prefer to spell it Vodou. It\u2019s most commonly found in Haiti and Louisiana (where the practices and rituals differ slightly from the Vodou of the Caribbean).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Baron Samedi and the Loa<\/h3>\n
In Vodou, there are many loa (or lwa), somewhat like angels or spirits of nature who serve the Bondye (the \u2018Good God\u2019), and are often equated to Catholic saints. There are several nachons, or nations, of loa, from the usually benevolent and cool Rada to the fiery and unpredictable Petro to the uproarious Gede, who preside over death.<\/div>\n

Baron Samedi, in his top hat, tails, and dark, broken glasses, is the loa of Death and leader of the Gede. He can often be found smoking a cigar or guzzling rum and kleren. With his large family, he guards the Gates of Guinee and guides the souls of the dead to the afterlife.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What about Voodoo Dolls and Zombies?<\/h2>\n

There are probably two things you immediately think of when you hear the word Vodou: Voodoo Dolls and Zombies. Both have become staples of movies and pop culture. You might be surprised then to learn that Voodoo dolls are in reality a product of Hollywood. While such dolls can be found in countless gift shops in Cajun country, they aren\u2019t actually used in Vodou. While early-20th-century movies like White Zombie<\/i> and I Walked With A Zombie<\/i> ensconced them in the public imagination, they have never been used by genuine practitioners of Vodou.<\/p>\n

Zombies, on the other hand, are very much one of the darker aspects of Vodou. It is believed that bokors<\/i>, Vodou priests and priestesses who practice dark magic, can turn the bodies of the recently dead into mindless, undead minions. In Vodou, such a fate is worse than death, since part of the person\u2019s soul \u2014 the petit bon ange or \u201clittle good angel\u201d \u2014 is trapped within their body, unable to escape their undead prison. Fortunately, though zombies are impervious to pain and unkillable, the spell animating them can be broken with a little salt, freeing the souls within.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
